How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged or cracked window can cause a lot of trouble. This can be an opportunity to upgrade to energy-efficient windows or insulated ones, and reap benefits like increased comfort, increased resale value and lower utility costs.

It's a project you can take on yourself for less than the cost of hiring a professional. You'll only require the right tools and a few minutes of your time.

Glass

If your single pane windows are old broken, deteriorating or damaged replacing them with more modern insulated or tempered glass can improve energy efficiency and reduce noise while preserving the original character of older homes. The procedure of replacing a window pane is relatively easy and can be accomplished by anyone with basic hand tools. In addition to a replacement pane, the following tools are needed: latex glazing putty; pliers, glazier's points and the use of a heat gun to warm the old putty if required. Before beginning, wear gloves and safety glasses as working with broken glass may cause injuries.

Begin by removing any remaining broken pieces of glass. It is recommended to use pliers for this however, a flathead may be useful as well. Utilize a wood chisel or putty knives to remove any old putty that remains around the frame and the window sash. Be careful and slow and be careful not to break the current window sash. This is best done on an elevated ladder, not on the ground. Also, have someone on the ground to hold it steady.

Once you've removed all the old putty, prepare the window frame to accommodate the new pane. Find the width and the height of the opening for the sash by subtracting 1/8 inch from each measurement (to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction). Bring these measurements to the nearest hardware store or home center and find a piece glass cut to size. You can also cut the glass by yourself if you possess the right tools.

After putting in the new glass, apply a small amount of caulking to the edge. This will make the glass weatherproof. Then, you can install a glazier's pointing on the frame's opposite side to hold the pane in the right place. The points shouldn't be so tight that they cause friction between the frame and sash however they should not be loose.

Before applying the putty knead it thoroughly until it is smooth and free of lumps. Then make it into pencil-sized strips. Place the first strip in the corner of the frame, working from one corner to the next so that it is even and smooth.

Glazier's Points

The glazier's points are tiny triangular metal pieces that allow glass to be secured to the frame without causing damage to the delicate surface. Understanding how to use these hidden tiny pieces of help is simple and could save you money on professional installation or the cost of purchasing new glass.

After removing the old putty, glazier points and any residue clean the frame thoroughly with an utility knife. Lightly sand the frame in the rabbet grooves, if necessary, to smooth rough areas. If you sand wood, protect it with painter’s tape to avoid accidental damage.

Write down the exact dimensions of the frame. These measurements can be brought to a home center or hardware store and the new pane will be cut slightly smaller. This will ensure a snug fit and leave room for expansion and contraction.

Place the new pane into the frame and push it into the frame with your hand. Make use of the chisel's point or the back of the putty blade to tap the glazier's points as shown in Figure 11. Repeat this procedure every 10 inches along the frame's perimeter.

Putty

A hurled baseball or a rock that is errant or a falling branch can cause a window to crack or break. Most windows can be repaired easily by installing a new piece. The glass is held in place by tiny metal clips known as the glazier's pointed and putty, often called glazing compound. Remove the old pane and clean the area using a rag, a pull-type scraper or wood chisel. Wear safety glasses and gloves while you do this work. If the window is secured to the frame, you'll have to use a heat gun to soften the adhesive prior to cutting it loose.

If you are planning to replace your original sash, you must remove the molding that supports the old pane. Then sand the sash to make sure it's flat and ready to be re-caulked. After the sash has been installed then, you can apply a silicone caulk over the glass. This will ensure that it doesn't be leaking or fade over time.

Remove the glazing points from the rabbets. These are the grooves in the sash, which is where the glass is located. If they're difficult to chisel, hold an instrument such as a heatgun over them to soften first. When using a heat tool, be careful to not scratch the sash's railings and sash.

After the old points of glazing and putty have been removed, make a bed for the new pane. Roll a rope with glazing compound between your fingers, and then make it about 1/2 inch thick. Press it into the rabbets where the glass will be placed. It is essential that the glass is positioned against the putty on each side So if you have to tap it, gently press the glass into the rabbet with your thumb.

If the new pane has damaged, you can use the silicone caulk or glass glue that is based on solvents to cover the crack prior to pressing it in the sash. Paint

If you've had a broken window pane, then you may be worried about the cost of replacing it. But the truth is that replacing one glass pane does not have to break the bank when you do it yourself. In fact, even a double glazing window replacement-pane window can be replaced at only a fraction of the cost of an expert.

First, if you're working on a large window, ensure that it is securely fixed to the frame. This job is relatively easy and fast using the proper tools and techniques.

When you are ready to start, remove the old window pane. Pry out the metal glazing points that are attached to it. These are essentially small metal triangles that function as "nails" which hold the window in in the wood frame. They are placed under a glaze putty or bead that hardens to an unbreakable wedge that holds the wood frame in place and hides the points.

After removal of the old pane clean the frame and wood. Scrape off any paint and sand down the rabbet grooves, where the glazing points used to be. Sand them down to bare wood surfaces, so that you can paint the frames with the same shade. After the sanding process, apply a coat of flax oil on the bare wood to extend the life of the frame.

The next step is to determine the width of the window opening. It is necessary to take vertical and horizontal measurements of the entire opening as well as the thickness of the old pane. Subtract 1/8 inch from each measurement to ensure you get the exact measurement for the new pane. This will allow for seasonal changes in the glass. You can take these measurements to a hardware store or home improvement shop and get the glass cut for you.

Now, it's time to bed the new window pane. To do this, place the pane inside the frame and move it around until a 1/16 inch of putty remains between the edge of the glass and the sash on all four sides.
